Samsung today put out a full page advertisement in India's leading english newspaper - The Times of India, offering a massive 10,000 INR discount on the Galaxy Note 2 phablet in exchange of your old smartphone. In addition to the exchange offer, Samsung is also offering a 0% EMI, down payment and processing fee to make it even more irresistible, although conditions apply as usual to determine the final discount applicable for your old smartphone. The advertisement boast's of 15 million sales in India for the Galaxy range and has titled the offer "Samsung Galaxy Note II Rs. 10,000 SMART UPGRADE OFFER".
As a result, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 now drops in price from it's earlier Smart Buy price tag of 37,500 INR to 27,500 INR, assuming one qualifies for the full discount on exchanging one's old smartphone.
It appears Samsung is not only taking the fight all out to Apple in response to Apple's iPhone discount and exchange schemes including their iPhone 5, but it could also be signalling a price revision is due shortly before Samsung announces it's successor to the current phablet flagship in the form of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
Several rumors reported on various sites have gathered pace recently suggesting that the Galaxy Note 3 will be feature packed offering a display size in the region of 6 inches with a possible full HD 1080p resolution. The Galaxy Note 3 is also expected to feature a similar if not the same camera as the 13MP shooter on the recently released Galaxy S4 in addition to a Snapdragon 800 processor running on the Exynos 5 Octa framework. Rumors also suggest Samsung could offer the Note 3 with a massive 3GB of RAM.
Nevertheless for now, it does appear Samsung is going to push volumes even further and try to ramp up sales by reworking their smartphone pricing strategy for the outgoing models. In fact with this drop in price, the Galaxy Note 2 should now find itself selling slightly above the Samsung Galaxy S3 - the usual assumption of maximum exchange value applied! For those in the market right now looking for an upgrade from their old smartphone, it would be worthwhile to check out both phones and make the most of the price cuts! But keep in mind that further price cuts might be due till just before or at the time the Galaxy Note 3 launches in September as rumored.
Update: It appears this exchange offer is in parallel with what some of the online retailers like Flipkart are offering based on the "Samsung OWN NOW" scheme as the Note II is still being listed at INR 35,990 on Flipkart. This in all probability means that full 10,000 INR valuations for your used smartphones might be difficult, else it makes better sense to go for the cashback offers which were advertised on the Galaxy range a while back.
